Skin sensitivity can occur anywhere on the body, but it’s often particularly uncomfortable around and under the eyes. Recognising potential triggers is key, alongside implementing a gentle skincare routine specially designed to help care for this delicate area.

From natural ingredients to moisture-packed formulas, discover how to soothe dry skin around the eyes, leaving it feeling comforted – and unlock youthful looking, smoother feeling skin that glows from within.

How is the skin around the eyes different?

The skin surrounding our eyes is different to that of our face or body. For one, it is noticeably thinner; its delicate nature makes it very sensitive, and it can be vulnerable to environmental stressors. It also contains fewer oil glands and less subcutaneous fat, which means this area can be quick to show visible signs of ageing. These factors make the skin around the eyes more susceptible to dryness and feelings of discomfort.

If you’re experiencing these sorts of issues, understanding why this might be happening is important. That way, you can work out how best to help soothe irritation due to dryness and restore your skin’s natural balance and radiance.

What causes feelings of discomfort around the eyes?

Feelings of discomfort can stem from a number of internal and external triggers, including:

Ageing

As we age, our skin may become more sensitive. Moisture loss can lead to dryness, while exposure to UV rays over time can weaken the skin around the eyes, increasing the risk of feelings of sensitivity.

Skin conditions and allergies

Some skin conditions – such as eczema and blepharitis – can cause inflammation around the eyes. They tend to flare up in response to emotional or environmental stressors, such as stress, weather or hormonal changes.

Similarly, hay fever and allergies can contribute to irritation in the eye area. Allergic reactions to certain products or ingredients might also be a cause; this is commonly known as contact dermatitis.

If you suspect a skin condition or allergy is behind the irritation, it’s recommended that you consult a doctor or dermatologist.

Incorrect make up removal

It can be tempting to scrub away stubborn make up, but doing so may exacerbate soreness around the eyes. The fragile skin can be quick to inflame with harsh rubbing, leading to redness and itchiness.

As such, it’s a good idea to use a specialised cleanser formulated to remove make up, both around the eyes and on the rest of your face. Our award-winning Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser is rich in impurity-dissolving cocoa butter – plus soothing chamomile and rosemary – to effortlessly lift make up, even stubborn mascara, while leaving skin feeling hydrated, comforted and clean.

Stress, sleep and screens

Whether from computers, phones, tablets or televisions, increased screen time means we’re frequently exposed to high levels of blue light. This can interfere with the production of melatonin – the hormone responsible for regulating sleep – and with poorer-quality sleep often comes dark circles and puffiness around the eyes.

Stress can also trigger inflammation and can even compromise the skin's barrier function, making it more prone to the appearance of dryness, redness & dullness.

What can help soothe feelings of discomfort?

Fortunately, there are many different ways to improve dry, uncomfortable feeling skin around the eyes – although remember, if your discomfort is caused by contact dermatitis, you should stop using the reaction-causing product immediately.

For other, more general dryness and feelings of discomfort, you could try the following:

  • Look out for witch hazel (to tone), aloe vera (to cool), and eyebright extract (to soothe and refresh)

Our Eyebright Soothing Eye Lotion combines all three ingredients to instantly soothe and revitalise tired, dry skin around the eyes. And the best part? This lightweight formula is ophthalmologically tested and suitable for both sensitive skin and contact lens-wearers.

  • Take regular breaks from screens, practise stress-relieving techniques, and try to prioritise restful sleep.
  • When moisturizing, choose an eye cream that is gentle enough for all skin types, like our Instant Brightening Eye Cream.

Looking to visibly lift and brighten? Superskin Eye Cream, formulated to visibly firm, reduce the look of puffiness, and improve the look of dark circles.

  • Incorporate a targeted cleanser to gently remove eye make up. These kind-to-skin blends are designed to help effortlessly break down waterproof mascara and eyeliner without resorting to excessive rubbing, helping keep your eyes clean and preserve the surrounding skin.

TOP TIP: Use a fresh, clean reusable cotton pad every time you cleanse.
